Is it normal to have a cough after you had your tonsils removed?

Last week my son had his tonsils removed & I know his appetite would be poor but my question is...is it normal that he is coughing? He does not sound congested at all, he is only coughing(like when you have something that doesn't want to come lose) Also, voice change...is that normal????
