What are some methods of torture (for AP English)?

For my AP English Language and Composition cl, I have to write a contemporary short story of the Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe, and I have no clue as where to begin. I need a scary setting, protagonist(s), antagonist(s), a punishment, and rescuers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
