Verb of these two sentencse?

The verbs are: was known (in the first sentence) and was able (in the second sentence). You need the "was" to make the verb complete. They are past progressive verbs. Being that they are past progressive verbs, you need to include the word "was." To not include it makes your verb incomplete.
